Will a Squirrel Chew on the Wood in My House?

A squirrel may be a cute little rodent, but these animals pose a serious risk to your home. Maybe even more than you have considered.

Like all rodents, squirrels have very sharp front teeth. They use these teeth to enable them to break through the shells of nuts, giving them access to food. Nuts are their common food source, because they can survive through a long winter. Without sharp teeth, they would be unable to gain access into those nuts and other similar foods to eat.

They Have to Be Maintained
Because of their diet, these teeth have to be maintained. They have to be taken care of so that they will remain sharp and durable. This is why squirrels will commonly chew on wood and other similar types of substances to maintain their teeth. Hard surface helps to sharpen and strengthen the teeth, ensuring that they are healthy during the lifetime of the rodent.

That is great for the squirrel, but it can pose a danger to you. Should a squirrel get inside your home, it still needs to maintain those teeth. Far more often than you may think, a squirrel gains access into a person’s home, either living in their basement, the walls of their house, or in the attic. While in there, they build a nest, but they also look for materials to chew and want to maintain their teeth. So, what do they chew on when they are inside your home?

If It’s Available, They Will Use It
This is the problem. Squirrels need something to chew on, and if they are setting up residence in your home then they are going to use what is available to them. This often means that they will chew on foundational boards, pieces of wood, furniture, or any other object that is handy to them. They need something hard and durable, and these kinds of things are perfect for them.

This is one of the primary reasons why squirrels in your attic can be extremely dangerous. If left in your attic for weeks, maybe even months, they can do considerable damage to the look and structure of your home.

It Gets Worse
What makes matters worse is that it can get much worse than this. One part of your home that may be at risk is the electrical wiring. Usually, this wiring is coated with a hard plastic or rubber material, something that would be ideal for a squirrel to chew on.

When they do, they open up the electrical wiring to the air. Either the squirrel can be directly electrocuted by it or the open current can cause a fire with the material inside your attic area. This is one of the primary reasons why a squirrel can become quite dangerous in your attic area.

If you know that one of these animals is inside there, you need to take action as swiftly as possible. There are many different devices you can use to assist you in getting the animal out, or you can hire a professional to assist you.
